History of Reflexology The origins of Reflexology, massaging the feet to help promote good health, date back to ancient Egypt. However, it was Dr William Fitzgerald and Dr Edwin Bowers, authors of ‘Relieving Pain at Home’ in 1917, who developed the Zone Theory which is used in Reflexology today. Fitzgerald found that the application of pressure on various zones of the foot not only relieved pain but in the majority of cases relieved the underlying cause as well. What is Reflexology Reflexology is a holistic technique that applies pressure to points on the feet which correspond to reflex points (organs, systems and structures of the body) in the body. By stimulating pressure points, reflexology has been found to reduce stress and tension, relieve pain and improve physical well-being, as well as promoting a good night’s sleep. The body can become out of balance due to stress, pain or illness. By stimulating many of the eleven major systems of the body including the circulatory, endocrine and nervous systems, reflexology helps eliminate toxins, boost the immune system and restore the body’s natural equilibrium. Popular Treatments Though reflexology does not diagnose or cure illnesses, it has been found to help many conditions, making them more manageable and reducing pain. Below is a list of some of the more common conditions: Reflexology is suitable for clients of all ages. You do not have to be unwell to consider a course of reflexology treatment. Healthy people can feel revitalised since treatment will help to boost the immune system and act as a good prevention against illness. |
